The author and the text :
“R.K Narayan” (1906-2001) is one of the leading figures of early Indian literature in English. His notable works include Malgudi Days and The Guide. He was awarded the Sahitya Academy award in 1958 for The Guide.
The story, an edited excerpt from Malgudi Days, is about a young boy called Swaminathan who is unwilling to go to school, but is forced by his father to attend school. The story explores how, through the events that follow, Swami's original reservations about his teacher, Samuel, get transformed considerably.
Unit 1
Read the following:
Lying in bed, Swami realized with a shudder that it was Monday morning.

It looked as though only a moment ago it was Friday.

অনুবাদঃ তার মনে হচ্ছিল ঠিক যেন এক মুহূর্ত আগে দিনটা ছিল শুক্রবার।
Already Monday was here.
উচ্চারণঃ অলরেডি মানডি ও্যয়াজ হিয়া(র)।
অনুবাদঃ আর এর মধ্যে সোমবার এসে গেল।
He hoped he didn't have to go to school.
উচ্চারণঃ হি হোপড হি ডিড'ন্ট হ্যাভ টু গৌ টু স্কুল।
অনুবাদঃ সে আশা করছিল তাকে যেন স্কুলে যেতে না হয়।
At nine o'clock, Swaminathan wailed, "I have a headache."
উচ্চারণঃ অ্যাট নাইন ও'ক্লক্, স্বামীনাথন ওয়ে(ই)ড়, “আই হ্যাভ অ্যা হেড্এক্।” (হেডেক্)
অনুবাদঃ ন'টার সময় স্বামীনাথন কাতরভাবে বলল, “আমার মাথার যন্ত্রণা হচ্ছে”।
Mother generously suggested that Swami might stay at home.
উচ্চারণঃ মাদার জেনারালি সাজেসটেড দ্যাট্ স্বামী মাইট্ স্টে(ই) অ্যাট হোম্।
অনুবাদঃ মা উদারভাবে বললেন স্বামী বাড়ি থাকতে পারে।
At 9.30, when he ought to have been in the school prayer hall, Swami was lying on the bench in Mother's room.
উচ্চারণঃ অ্যাট নাইন-থার্টি, হোয়েন হি অট্ টু হ্যাভ্ বিন্ ইন্ দ্য স্কুল্ প্রেয়ার হল, স্বামী ও্যয়াজ্ লাইয়িং অন্ দ্য বেনচ্ ইন মাদারস্ রুম্।
অনুবাদঃ সাড়ে নটার সময় যখন তার স্কুলের প্রার্থনার দালানে থাকা উচিত ছিল, তখন স্বামী মায়ের ঘরে একটা বেঞ্চের উপর শুয়েছিল।
Father asked him, "Have you no school today?"
"Headache," Swami replied.
উচ্চারণঃ ফাদার আস্কড্ হিম, “হ্যাভ্ ইউ নো স্কুল টুডে ?”
“হেড্এক্” স্বামী রিপ্লায়েড্।
অনুবাদঃ বাবা তাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন, “আজ তোমার স্কুল নেই?”
স্বামী বলল, “মাথার যন্ত্রণা”।
"Nonsense! Dress up and go."
উচ্চারণঃ “নসেন্স! ড্রেস্ আপ্ অ্যানড্ গৌ”।
অনুবাদঃ “মূর্খ! জামাকাপড় পরে স্কুলে যাও।”
"Headache!"
"Loaf about less on Sundays and you will be without a headache on Monday."
উচ্চারণঃ হেডএক
“লোফ্ অ্যাবাউট লেস্ অন্ সানডেজ্ অ্যানড্ ইউ উইল্ বি উইদাউট্ অ্য হেড্এক্ অন মান্ডে”।
অনুবাদঃ “রবিবারে ঘোরাঘুরিটা একটু কমাও তাহলে সোমবারে মাথার যন্ত্রণা থাকবে না”।
Swami knew how strict his father could be.
উচ্চারণঃ স্বামী নিউ হাও স্ট্রিক্ট্ হিজ ফাদার কুড্ বি।
অনুবাদঃ স্বামী জানত তার বাবা কতটা কড়া হতে পারেন।
So he changed his tactics.
উচ্চারণঃ সো হি চেঞ্জড্ হিজ ট্যাক্টিকস্।
অনুবাদঃ তাই সে তার কৌশল পালটে ফেলল।
"I can't go so late to the class."
উচ্চারণঃ “আই ক্যান্ট্ গৌ সো লেট টু দ্য ক্লাস।”
অনুবাদঃ “এত দেরি করে আমি ক্লাসে যেতে পারব না।”
"You'll have to. It is your own fault."
উচ্চারণঃ “ইউ উইল হ্যাভ্ টু। ইট্ ইজ্ ইয়োর ওন্ ফল্ট।”
অনুবাদঃ “তোমাকে যেতেই হবে। দোষটা তোমার নিজের”।
"What will the teacher think if I go so late?"
"Tell him you had a headache and so are late."
উচ্চারণঃ “ও্য্যঅট্ উইল্ দ্য টিচার থিংক্ ইফ্ আই গৌ সো লেট।”
“টেল্ হিম্ ইউ হ্যাড্ অ্যা হেড্এক্ অ্যানড্ সো আর লেট্।”
অনুবাদঃ “আমি এত দেরি করে গেলে শিক্ষক মহাশয় কী ভাববেন”?
“তাঁকে বলো তোমার মাথার যন্ত্রণা হচ্ছিল তাই দেরি হয়েছে।”
"He will scold me if I say so."
উচ্চারণঃ “হি উইল্ স্কোলড্ মি ইফ্ আই সে(ই) সো।”
অনুবাদঃ “এই কথা বললে তিনি আমায় বকবেন।”
"Will he? Let us see.
উচ্চারণঃ “উইল্ হি? লেট্ আস্ সি।
অনুবাদঃ “তাই কি? দেখা যাক।

উচ্চারণঃ হোয়াট্ ইজ হিজ নেম?” “স্যামুয়েল”।

"He is a very angry man.

অনুবাদঃ বিশেষত যেসব ছেলে দেরি করে আসে তাদের উপর খুব রেগে যান।

অনুবাদঃ “উনি এত রাগি হলে এ ব্যাপারে তোমাদের প্রধান শিক্ষক মহাশয়কে জানাও না কেন?”
“ওরা বলে এমনকি প্রধান শিক্ষক মহাশয়ও ওনাকে ভয় করেন।”
