My Own True family
Ted Hughes

The author and the text:

Edward James "Ted Hughes (1930-1998) was a noted English poet, and had been the Poet Laureate of Great Britain from 1984 till his death. His famous works include Birthday Letters, The Hawk in the Rain and Tales from Ovid.

The poem describes the magical experience of a young child in an oakwood, and indicates that human beings and trees should thrive as a single family. It focuses strongly on the need to protect our natural environment for the welfare of man-kind.

Once I crept in an oakwood-I was looking for a stag.

I met an old woman there-all knobbly stick and rag.

She said: 'I have your secret here inside my little bag.

Then she began to cackle and I began to quake.

She opened up her little bag and I came twice awake-

Surrounded by a staring tribe and me tied to a stake.

They said: 'We are the oak-trees and your own true family.

We are chopped down, we are torn up, you do not blink an eye.

Unless you make a promise now now you are going to die."

'Whenever you see an oak-tree felled, swear now you will plant two.

Unless you swear the black oak bark will wrinkle over you And root you among the oaks where you were born but never grew."

This was my dream beneath the boughs, the dream that altered me.

When I came out of the oakwood, back to human company, My walk was the walk of a human child, but my heart was a tree.

Summary of the Poem

The poem describes a magical and dream-like experience of a child who enters an oak forest. While searching for a stag, the child meets a strange old woman who reveals a powerful secret. Suddenly, the child finds himself surrounded by oak trees that speak to him and call themselves his “own true family.”

The oak trees accuse humans of destroying forests without caring. They warn the child that unless he promises to plant two oak trees for every one that is cut down, he will be punished by being turned into a tree himself. The child makes the promise, and the dream ends.

When he returns to the human world, he is still physically a child, but his heart has become one with nature. The experience changes him forever.

Themes of the Poem

  1. Man and Nature as One Family
The poem shows that humans and trees are deeply connected and should live together like a family.

  2. Environmental Protection
Ted Hughes strongly highlights the danger of cutting down trees and destroying forests. The poem is a warning against environmental destruction.

  3. Transformation and Realization
The dream transforms the child’s thinking. Though he looks human, his heart now belongs to nature.

  4. Responsibility of Humans
Humans have a duty to protect trees and maintain balance in nature for the future of mankind.

Message of the Poem

The poem teaches us that destroying nature is equal to destroying ourselves. Trees are not lifeless objects but living beings connected to human life. We must protect forests, plant more trees, and live responsibly with nature.

Explanation of the Ending

The final lines—

“My walk was the walk of a human child,
But my heart was a tree.”

mean that although the child remains human in appearance, his thoughts, feelings, and values are now rooted in love and respect for nature.
