One day a little boy visited Mahatma Gandhi.
একদিন এক ছোটো ছেলে মহাত্মা গান্ধীর সঙ্গে দেখা করতে এল।
Gandhiji's dress surprised the boy.
গান্ধীর পোশাক দেখে ছেলেটি অবাক হয়ে গেল।
"Such a great man without a shirt!" he wondered.
সে ভাবল, "এত বড় একজন মানুষ, অথচ গায়ে কোনো জামা নেই!"
"Why don't you wear a shirt, Gandhiji?" the little boy asked.
ছোটো ছেলেটি জিজ্ঞেস করল, "গান্ধীজি, আপনি জামা পরেন না কেন?"
"Where is the money, son?" Gandhiji asked gently.
গান্ধীজি মৃদু স্বরে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "টাকা কোথায় পাব, বাবা?
"I am very poor. I cannot buy a shirt."
আমি তো খুব গরিব। জামা কেনার সামর্থ্য আমার নেই।"
The boy felt pity.
ছেলেটির খুব মায়া হলো।
"My mother sews well", he said.
সে বলল, "আমার মা খুব ভালো সেলাই করতে পারেন।
"She makes all my clothes.
আমার সব জামাকাপড় তিনিই তৈরি করেন।
I will ask her to sew a shirt for you."
আমি তাঁকে দিয়ে আপনার জন্য একটা জামা সেলাই করিয়ে দেব।"
"How many shirts can your mother make?"
"তোমার মা কতগুলো জামা তৈরি করতে পারবেন?"
Gandhiji asked.
গান্ধীজি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন।
"Just tell me how many you need", said the boy.
ছেলেটি বলল, "শুধু বলুন আপনার কতগুলো চাই।
"She will make as many as you want."
আপনি যতগুলো চাইবেন, মা ঠিক ততগুলোই তৈরি করে দেবেন।"
Gandhiji thought for a moment.
গান্ধীজি কিছুক্ষণ ভাবলেন।
Then he said, "I have a very large family, son.
তারপর বললেন, "আমার পরিবার তো অনেক বড়, বাবা।
I have forty crore brothers and sisters."
আমার চল্লিশ কোটি ভাইবোন আছে।"
"Till everyone of them has a shirt, how can I wear one?" Gandhiji asked.
গান্ধীজি বললেন, "তাদের সবার গায়ে জামা না ওঠা পর্যন্ত আমি কী করে জামা পরব?"
The reply surprised the boy.
কথাটা শুনে ছেলেটি অবাক হয়ে গেল।
Forty crore brothers and sisters!
চল্লিশ কোটি ভাইবোন!
Gandhiji was right.
গান্ধীজি ঠিকই বলেছিলেন।
After all, Gandhiji felt all the people of India were his family members.
আসলে, ভারতের সব মানুষকেই গান্ধীজি নিজের পরিবারের সদস্য বলে মনে করতেন।
